Keeping the party together in power and staying in political office

I’m so sorry not to be going to London on Saturday, because of a long-anticipated trip elsewhere, but I hope the event goes as well as the previous two marches I’ve been on. This morning I attended a breakfast meeting in Kenilworth of Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce at which the Jeremy Wright, Attorney General and MP for people in Kenilworth & Southam constituency, spoke for 40 minutes about the process of Brexit. He suggested that it would probably be the December 2018 Council of Ministers meeting that would agree the deal although he admitted it might be the October meeting. He was dismissive in equal measure of the possibility of ‘no deal’ and a People’s Vote, the latter he regarded as undemocratic and disrespectful of the will of the Brotish people (yawn). He cautioned the business leaders present about expecting all the terms of trade to be agreed by December. Three things struck me: 1) the complete silence in which he was received – it was as though what he was saying was meaningless to the audience who just want to know what they should be doing now to prepare, 2) his complete lack of practical reference to the impact of Brexit on his constituents’ businesses, farms, health and care sector, universities and tourist organisations let alone on individual families and 3) how he made absolutely no reference to the clearly expressed will in the referendum of the people in his constituency. It’s clearer than ever that Brexit, the referendum and the negotiations are about nothing else other than keeping one political party together and in power and certain individuals in political office. The only other thing he said of note was that he claimed to have campaigned for ‘remain’ in 2016. Clearly his definition of campaigning is vastly different to mine!
